Fear – when things get scary!

Fear – when things get scary!

Everyone has faced fear at some time in their lives.  Fear, like other difficult emotions is a natural part of life. You feel it rip through your body and the terror of it stops you from thinking. There is actually no time to think at all – it’s pure, it’s real, it’s scary……

Everyone’s fear is different, from being young and learning to ride a bike to being old and losing our confidence with things, like driving. Crossing the road, going out shopping the list is endless.

I remember the first time I had a public speaking engagement, I was so nervous, scared and worried, my hands wouldn’t stop sweating, my body was shaking and no matter what I did I had no control to stop my knees from a knocking…… even though I kept using the breathing technique’s I had learned over the years with my Yoga practice.

The fear was here it was real and it completely took over. It wasn’t going away.

I held my head up high and went out there and got through it. I embraced the fear and once I knew nothing was going to stop to take over my whole being, I learnt to embrace it. I stopped fighting it. I continued to breathe through it and each time I hit that stage around the country I embraced it. Guess what? I won over the Fear, it got easier the fear couldn’t win. I was controlling it.

We have lots of different emotions that can be going on through our mind and bodies at any given time. If we learn about ourselves and are willing to open up our minds, to work with our bodies and utilise our breath we can take control of these emotions and not let them get the better of us. We can be the best we can and beat it.

Take control of your body – it’s your’s it’s no one else’s and they can’t control it only you. You are able to breathe in this fear and breathe in the freedom. Minute by minute breath, by breath, you can keep choosing.

When you are afraid be compassionate with yourself and work through your feelings.

When things feel scary  – We all have these moments.

“STOP” and use this

  • Lie down or sit in a comfortable position.
  • Inhale, letting your abdomen expand, hold for a few seconds, then exhale quickly through your mouth.
  • Inhale again, holding the breath in your upper chest, and then exhale through your mouth.
  • Place one hand on your abdomen and one hand on your heart. Breathe into the abdomen, taking several breaths as you relax that area. Now breathe into and relax the heart.
  • Now as you relax, witness your thoughts and emotions. Be totally present, make space for it. Let your fear freely arise and allow it to release.
  • Be centred and witness without being lost in it.
  • This can be as short or as long as you need it to be for YOU.
